Going loco for coco(nut oil)

As anyone who follows me on Instagram (hi Dad) will know, I recently returned from a trip to Sri Lanka. That country is officially amazing. I spent the first week exploring tea plantations and making mountainous pilgrimages in the island’s centre, then headed down to the south coast for blissed out sunbathing and sand-between-the-toes.

Why thanks, Sri Lanka – you're looking pretty darn great yourself! 🌴☀️#wijayabeach

Travelling with the chef meant, obviously, that a large part of the trip was focused on food. We tried hundreds of delicious dishes and local delicacies but of all the culinary experiences on offer, the country’s fresh yellow coconuts served up roadside were one of my favourite treats. After we’d slurped up all our nuts’ cooling water, we’d hand them back to the machete-wielding local greengrocers – who would split the nuts in two and carve out makeshift spoons from the shell, allowing us to scoop out the wobbly white coconut jelly hidden within.

As I stood, ankle-deep in the warm sea on Mirissa Beach, greedily scratching up every last morsel from that day’s coconut, I considered these wondernuts. I’m more than a little sceptical of fads and crazes but despite the hype and my better judgement, coconut oil has quickly become one of my desert island beauty products.

How to: get rid of split ends!

IMG_3646.JPG
Long hair, don’t care? Chances are if your hair is past shoulder length and looking a little ratty then you might! I’ve had long hair for years now, and the longer (and older!) it gets, the worse my split ends become – especially with the added damage from heat and styling. Don’t get your tresses in a stress though, my hairdresser showed me a quick fix for ridding yourself of those nasty ends, even if they go higher up your barnet than you’d like to lose, so you can still have long, luscious locks!

AW14 makeup & beauty trend report

AW14 makeup trend report

Charlotte and I had so much fun writing this feature for local lifestyle magazine, Cambridge Edition. We often trawl through the re-purposed trends from the catwalk feeling a dull sense of déjà vu, but for this one we got together around mine to write the copy together, which is something we haven’t done in ages – usually bouncing ideas between What’sApp and Googledocs. Of course it doubles as a great excuse for our dogs to have a play as well. Toby is fast approaching his first birthday and it’s so sweet to see their little friendship growing and developing. Two dogs who couldn’t be more different, sharing moments 🙂

Be a trend-setter this summer

I’m currently researching into must-have products for AW14. Now, since we’ve been working on these trend reports, Charlotte and I have noticed all certain trends seem to repeat themselves, regardless of style nor season – but i’m ok with this. While I may be wowed by some of the incredible artistry from the catwalks, when it comes to my everyday makeup look it’s way more toned-down – which is just how I want it.

Beauty Box review

We recently tested out various Beauty Boxes for our feature with Cambridge Edition and Bury Edition, and my gosh we had fun – so tempting to subscribe to every single one, I mean, how nice to receive something in post that isn’t bills, junk mail and pizza menu’s (actually the pizza is quite tempting too…)

Prime time – make your make-up work harder!

With the weather taking a terrible turn, and Christmas around the corner (yes, we haven’t started our X-mas shopping yet either!) there’s never been a better time to think a little harder about your skincare routine. Harsher winter weather means protecting the skin most exposed to the conditions – and this season, that means your face! Get yourself a great primer and make your make-up work harder. Take a look at our recent article from Cambridge Edition and Bury Edition September issues.

MAC Retro Matte collection – new launch!

As big fans of a matte lip, we were so excited to hear of MAC’s latest launch for AW13. The new Retro Matte formula includes eight Pro Longwear Lip Pencils and eight Lipsticks, plus we’ve heard that all 16 shades are going to be here to stay, so no fear (for now at least!) of falling for a limited edition colour only to have have the pain of it becoming discontinued. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one of their most striking shades in the collection; All Fired Up is a confident fuchsia red that is surprisingly easy to wear for its initial bold appearance, where I feel the matte finish offers a more grown up look to this cracking candy colour.
